I have been an ardent admirer of Dylan Thomas - his work and the man who challenged the conventions of post and pre war England and Wales with absolute, unswaying commitment - since my teens. I have accumulated quite a collection of books by and about him as well as ephemera, videos, records and cassettes.
I always felt that a bust of him would enhance my collection and I tried, in vain, to purchase one. There was one in the The Portreeves Restaurant in Market Lane in Laugharne; the last from the pottery that was attached, the mould long lost. Another was in the Boat House itself and despite repeated attempts I was unsuccessful in prising them from their owners' hands. So I decided to commission a sculptor to make make one and this is it.
“Love the words” is the legend at the base followed by Dylan Thomas 1914 to 1953. “Love the words” is what Thomas beseeched both actors and audience to do when the play Under Milk Wood was first staged at the Poetry Centre of the Y.M.Y.W.H.A. in New York in 1953 and the side view has captured the lecturn leaning poet, conscious Woodbine hanging from his lips.
The bust is made from bronze coloured resin and sits 15 cm high and 10 cm wide.
I had a hundred made and have sold most with still a dozen or so left at £45 plus a contribution to P&P in the UK of £2.70.
